A small herd of cattle spreads across a Montana pasture as sunlight breaks through the branches of a tall tree, scattering beams across the grass. One rests in the foreground, another turns to look straight back at us, and the others wander and graze nearby. These are the unhurried moments of ranch life that I find most peaceful, when the day is warm and there is nowhere else to be.
The rays of light were the heart of this piece for me. I built up the dark masses of the trees so the sunlight could pour through and glow across the herd, giving a black and white drawing the warmth of a golden summer day.
